ScotRail train
running late?

You could be due compensation. We'll take the claim admin off your hands.

ScotRail

30 minutes matters

ScotRail Delay Repay starts if your ScotRail journey arrives 30 minutes or more late. Cancelled ScotRail trains count too when the cancellation delays your journey enough to qualify.

The catch

ScotRail still makes you
fill in the form

ScotRail sends manual claims through its Delay Repay portal or postal form. Which means finding your journey details, proving the ticket or Smartcard journey, and getting it all in before the 28-day deadline. Here's what that route looks like:

  1. Check that a ScotRail delay or cancellation got you to your final destination at least 30 minutes late. A 15-minute ScotRail delay will not meet the published threshold.
  2. Submit the claim within 28 days of the affected journey. If you use the postal form, make sure ScotRail receives it within that window.
  3. Go to the official ScotRail Delay Repay portal, or use ScotRail's postal claim form if you would rather send the claim by post.
  4. Enter the journey date, planned train details, origin, destination, delay length, ticket type, fare and proof of travel or purchase.
  5. Add the right evidence for your ticket: paper ticket image, Smartcard number, Season Ticket and photocard, or PAYG app journey history.
  6. Choose the payment route ScotRail offers for that claim, such as PayPal, vouchers, cheque, card payment or Smart Plus account credit where applicable.
  7. If you did not travel and want money back for an unused ticket, do not turn that into Delay Repay. The refund normally goes back through the retailer instead.

The ScotRail rules that trip people up

Proof to gather

Get the proof ready before you start: a paper ticket photo or original ticket, Smartcard number, Season Ticket and photocard image, or PAYG app journey-history screenshot showing the origin, destination and fare.

Bought somewhere else?

Bought through Trainline, a work booking tool or another seller? If ScotRail caused the delay and you travelled, the compensation claim goes to ScotRail. If you did not travel, ask the retailer about an unused-ticket refund.

Season Ticket claims

ScotRail Season Ticket holders can claim for eligible 30+ minute delays. Have the right proof ready, such as Smartcard number, paper Season Ticket photo, matching photocard image, PAYG journey history when relevant. We have not used unverified weekly, monthly or annual divisors here.

Auto claims

ScotRail does not appear to offer a current automatic Delay Repay scheme. Use the online portal or postal claim form. ScotRail may use automated checks to assess online claims, but that is not the same as automatic payout.

Rejection risks

Common risks include claiming late, claiming for less than 30 minutes, missing proof, choosing the wrong operator, relying on the original timetable when a temporary one applied, or having no matching Smartcard/PAYG journey record.

How ScotRail pays

ScotRail lists PayPal and cash vouchers online. Its postal form also lists cheque, card payment and rail travel vouchers, while Smart Plus refunds may be paid as Smart Plus account credit.

Bottom line...

A 30-minute delay can pay

If a ScotRail service got you to your destination 30 minutes or more late, you could be due UK train delay compensation. That covers central belt trips like Glasgow to Edinburgh, Inter7City journeys to Aberdeen, Dundee or Inverness, and rural routes such as the West Highland Line when ScotRail caused the delay.

ScotRail payout bands

ScotRail calculates Delay Repay as a percentage of your ticket cost, based on how late you arrived and whether you had a single, return or season-style ticket.

ScotRail rates:

ScotRail-specific rules:

  • ScotRail Delay Repay starts when a ScotRail service gets you to your destination 30 minutes or more late.
  • Cancelled ScotRail trains are covered when the cancellation delays your journey enough to qualify.
  • Claims must be submitted within 28 days of the delayed journey.
  • ScotRail normally assesses Delay Repay against any temporary timetable that was in place.
  • If you bought the ticket elsewhere, claim from ScotRail when ScotRail caused the delay and you still travelled.
  • ScotRail Season Ticket and Flexipass holders can claim for eligible 30+ minute delays, but exact season-ticket divisors should be checked with ScotRail.

ScotRail FAQs

ScotRail Delay Repay

Can I claim ScotRail Delay Repay for a 15-minute delay?

No. ScotRail Delay Repay starts at 30 minutes or more, so a 15-minute delay is below ScotRail's published threshold.

Are cancelled ScotRail trains covered by Delay Repay?

Yes. If a cancelled ScotRail service means you arrive 30 minutes or more late and you still travel, it can count for Delay Repay. If you decide not to travel, an unused-ticket refund may be the right route instead.

How long do I have to claim ScotRail Delay Repay?

ScotRail says Delay Repay claims must be made within 28 days of the delayed journey. Postal claim forms need to reach ScotRail inside that window.

What evidence do I need for a ScotRail Delay Repay claim?

For ScotRail, you may need a paper ticket photo or original ticket, a 16-digit Smartcard number, a Season Ticket and photocard image, or a PAYG app journey-history screenshot showing the origin, destination, and fare.

Do I claim from ScotRail if I bought through Trainline?

Yes, if ScotRail caused the delay and you travelled, claim compensation from ScotRail. If you did not travel and need a refund for an unused ticket, that is usually handled by the retailer.

Can Railed claim ScotRail Delay Repay for me?

Yes. Railed can prepare and submit an eligible ScotRail Delay Repay claim for you. If ScotRail pays compensation, we send it on after our 10% service fee. If the claim is rejected, there is no fee.
