30 minutes matters
ScotRail Delay Repay starts if your ScotRail journey arrives 30 minutes or more late. Cancelled ScotRail trains count too when the cancellation delays your journey enough to qualify.
The catch
ScotRail sends manual claims through its Delay Repay portal or postal form. Which means finding your journey details, proving the ticket or Smartcard journey, and getting it all in before the 28-day deadline. Here's what that route looks like:
Claim check
Get the proof ready before you start: a paper ticket photo or original ticket, Smartcard number, Season Ticket and photocard image, or PAYG app journey-history screenshot showing the origin, destination and fare.
Bought through Trainline, a work booking tool or another seller? If ScotRail caused the delay and you travelled, the compensation claim goes to ScotRail. If you did not travel, ask the retailer about an unused-ticket refund.
ScotRail Season Ticket holders can claim for eligible 30+ minute delays. Have the right proof ready, such as Smartcard number, paper Season Ticket photo, matching photocard image, PAYG journey history when relevant. We have not used unverified weekly, monthly or annual divisors here.
ScotRail does not appear to offer a current automatic Delay Repay scheme. Use the online portal or postal claim form. ScotRail may use automated checks to assess online claims, but that is not the same as automatic payout.
Common risks include claiming late, claiming for less than 30 minutes, missing proof, choosing the wrong operator, relying on the original timetable when a temporary one applied, or having no matching Smartcard/PAYG journey record.
ScotRail lists PayPal and cash vouchers online. Its postal form also lists cheque, card payment and rail travel vouchers, while Smart Plus refunds may be paid as Smart Plus account credit.

Bottom line...
If a ScotRail service got you to your destination 30 minutes or more late, you could be due UK train delay compensation. That covers central belt trips like Glasgow to Edinburgh, Inter7City journeys to Aberdeen, Dundee or Inverness, and rural routes such as the West Highland Line when ScotRail caused the delay.
ScotRail calculates Delay Repay as a percentage of your ticket cost, based on how late you arrived and whether you had a single, return or season-style ticket.
ScotRail rates:
| Delay | Single | Return | Season |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30-59 mins | 50% | 25% | Journey value |
| 60-119 mins | 100% | 50% | Journey value |
| 120+ mins | 100% | 100% | Journey value |
