Avanti West Coast

Did you know...

If an Avanti West Coast service got you to your destination 15 minutes or more late, including after a cancellation where you travelled later, you may be entitled to compensation.

But...

Making the Delay Repay claim takes
agessss

Avanti West Coast makes you claim through its Delay Repay portal. Which means digging out your journey details, proving what you bought, and submitting everything before the deadline. Here's what the manual route looks like:

  1. Check that an Avanti West Coast service delayed your arrival at your final destination by 15 minutes or more. If your planned train was cancelled and you boarded another service, Avanti works from your overall arrival delay.
  2. Submit the claim within 28 days of the affected journey, so you cannot stick it on the later pile forever.
  3. Go to the official Avanti West Coast Delay Repay portal, then create an account or sign in before you even get to the actual claim.
  4. Enter the journey you intended to take, not just the messy journey you ended up taking, then add the booking reference or smartcard number, ticket price, scheduled departure, route, and enough evidence to show you paid for it.
  5. Make sure the claim is going to Avanti West Coast, pick how you want to be paid, and check the details carefully because missing or wrong information can slow the whole thing down.
  6. If you bought an Advance ticket direct from Avanti, you can opt into Automated Delay Repay with the same email address you used to buy the ticket. You need to opt in no later than the day of travel for it to apply to that journey.
  7. If you did not travel because of the disruption, do not use Delay Repay for that. Avanti says abandoned journeys are handled as refunds from the place you bought the ticket.

Before you claim

The bits that catch people out

Evidence

Have the ticket, booking reference or smartcard number, ticket price, journey date, scheduled departure time, origin, destination, and proof of purchase ready. Avanti says weak proof is a common reason claims get rejected.

Trainline or another retailer

You still claim Delay Repay from Avanti if an Avanti West Coast service caused the delay, even if you bought the ticket somewhere else. If you abandoned the trip and did not travel, ask the seller for a refund instead.

Season tickets

Season-ticket claims are not based on the whole pass value. Avanti works from a proportional journey value: Weekly: 1/10 of the total ticket price, Flexi Season: 1/16 of the total ticket price, Monthly: 1/40 of the total ticket price, Quarterly: 1/120 of the total ticket price, Annual: 1/464 of the total ticket price.

Automatic Delay Repay

Automated Delay Repay only covers eligible Advance tickets bought direct from Avanti after you create a Delay Repay account with the same email address and opt in no later than the day of travel. If no email arrives within 48 hours, claim manually.

Rejections and appeals

Common problems include claiming after 28 days, entering the train you actually took instead of the one you planned to board, using the wrong operator, weak purchase proof, wrong journey details, or no 15-minute delay being found.

Payment choices

Avanti says online claims can be paid back to your credit or debit card, or directly to your bank account. Paper-form claims can use cheque or Rail Travel Voucher compensation.

What could Avanti owe me?

Avanti West Coast calculates Delay Repay as a percentage of your ticket cost, based on how late you arrived and whether you had a single, return, or season ticket.

Avanti-specific rules:

  • You can claim when an Avanti West Coast train delayed your arrival by 15 minutes or more.
  • The delay is measured against your scheduled arrival time at your destination, including connections when Avanti caused the delay.
  • If your planned Avanti train was cancelled and you boarded another service, the claim is based on your overall arrival delay.
  • Claims must be submitted within 28 days of the affected journey.
  • If disruption meant you abandoned the journey instead of travelling, Avanti treats that as a ticket refund from the seller, not Delay Repay.
  • Season ticket compensation is based on the proportional value of the delayed journey.
